Special Stitches

SC2tog (using invisible decrease method): Insert hook into front loop of the first stitch. Insert hook into front loop of second stitch. Yarn over. Draw through the first two loops on hook. Yarn over. Draw through both loops on hook.

Notes

  • Checking your gauge is not required for this pattern. Use a hook that is smaller than the size recommended for your yarn weight. This will ensure that your stuffing will not show through the stitches.
  • This pattern is worked in the round. Use a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of each round.
  • Invisible decreases are recommended. Please see “Special Stitches”.
  • Safety eyes and noses pose a choking risk for babies; therefore, if making this toy for a baby, I recommend using yarn, felt, or embroidered details.
  • Crayon requires stuffing. Stuff as you work to ensure the piece is completely filled.

Tips & Tricks

  • This small crayon crochet pattern is worked in a continuous rounds, which means that you will not join each round with a slip stitch, rather you will continue working in a spiral. Use a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round to help you keep track of your rounds and stitches.
  • To practice any specific stitches or techniques found in this pattern, take a look at my post on amigurumi basics and crocheting in the round.
  • The invisible decrease method is a great way to make your decreasing SC2tog stitches blend in well with your other stitches.

Alterations

  • Add eyes or other face details with embroidery or safety eyes to make your crochet crayons even more fun!
  • A plush yarn like Parfait Chunky, and a corresponding hook size, will create a larger crayon amigurumi! I use a 5.0mm (H) crochet hook with Parfait Chunky yarn.
