Stitch Abbreviations

st = stitch
sl st = slip stitch
ch = chain
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
SC2tog = single crochet 2 stitches together (invisible decrease is recommended)

Special Stitches

SC2tog (using invisible decrease method): Insert hook into front loop of the first stitch. Insert hook into front loop of second stitch. Yarn over. Draw through the first two loops on hook. Yarn over. Draw through both loops on hook.

Notes

  • Checking your gauge is not required for this pattern. Use a hook that is smaller than the size recommended for your yarn weight. This will ensure that your stuffing will not show through the stitches.
  • All pieces are worked in the round. Use a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of each round.
  • Invisible decreases are recommended. Please see “Special Stitches”.
  • Safety eyes and noses pose a choking risk for babies; therefore, if making this toy for a baby, I recommend using yarn, felt, or embroidered details.
  • All pieces require full stuffing. Stuff as you work to ensure each piece is completely filled.
  • See tutorial photos.

Pattern

Using 4.0mm (G) crochet hook:

Using color A (shown as white):

R1: Begin with 6 SC in a magic ring. (6 sts)

R2: 2 SC in each st around. (12 sts)

R3: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (18 sts)

R4: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. (24 sts)

R5-11: 1 SC in each st around. (24 sts)

R12: Working in the front loops only, *1 SC in next st, 2 DC in next st, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (32 sts)

If adding safety eyes, insert them now between R6-7, with approximately 4 sts showing in between the eyes.

R13: Now working in the unworked back loops only from R11, *SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. (18 sts)

R14: *SC2tog, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (12 sts)

Fill with stuffing.

R15: *SC2tog. Repeat from * around. (6 sts)

Weave in and out of remaining sts and pull tight to close. Fasten off.

Finishing & Assembly

Using color B (shown as pink), embroider cheeks on the ghost between R7-8, over 2 sts just below the outer edge of each eye.

Tips & Tricks

  • Use stitch markers to keep track of the beginning of each of your continuous rounds.
  • Use the invisible decrease method for your SC2tog stitches so that your decreases blend in to the rest of your single crochet stitches.

Alterations

  • Use a plush yarn like Parfait Chunky to make a larger ghost amigurumi!
  • Make a ghost keychain by attaching a keyring to the top of the ghost amigurumi.
  • Crochet a long chain and attach multiple ghosts to it for a cute garland decoration.
  • Make a chain of 80, attach a ghost amigurumi to one side and another spooky ornament to the other side, for a cute Halloween car charm!

  1. when i do round 11 there is 24 then when i follow round 12 i come up with 36 not 32. what am i doing wrong?

    1. Hello! It sounds like you aren’t might be doing extra stitches. You will do the SC, 2 DC, SC, sequence a total of 8 times. Be sure that you aren’t missing the SC at the beginning or end of the round. It will look like this: (SC, 2 DC, SC), (SC, 2 DC, SC), (SC, 2 DC, SC), and so on. Hope that helps!

  2. Hi! I have made about 10 of the little ghosts and I can’t get the count of 30 on round 12. I keep coming up with 32. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. They still come out really cute, but my OCD brain will not let it go.

    Please help!

    1. Hello! I’m so sorry, that was a typo that I thought I fixed already but it must not have saved properly. The correct count is 32, so you aren’t doing anything wrong! 🙂

  3. Made this as a zipper-pull with glow-in-the-dark wool for my grandaughter, she is going to be delighted to go trick-or-treating with this adorable ghost!! Thank you for the easy to follow instructions!
