SC2tog (using invisible decrease method): Insert hook into front loop of the first stitch. Insert hook into front loop of second stitch. Yarn over. Draw through the first two loops on hook. Yarn over. Draw through both loops on hook.
Notes
- Checking your gauge is not required for this pattern. Use a hook that is smaller than the size recommended for your yarn weight. This will ensure that your stuffing will not show through the stitches.
- This pattern requires minimal sewing. The legs, body, and head are worked as one piece, and the arms are worked directly into the body as you work, rather than sewing later. The only sewing required is the buttons and bow.
- All pieces are worked in the round. Use a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of each round.
- Invisible decreases are recommended. Please see “Special Stitches”.
- Safety eyes and noses pose a choking risk for babies; therefore, if making this toy for a baby, I recommend using yarn, felt, or embroidered details.
- All pieces, with the exception of the buttons and bow, require stuffing. Stuff each piece as you work to ensure the piece is completely filled.
- See tutorial photos.

Note: In the next round you will be crocheting the arms in place. Due to differences in tension, yarn, etc., you may need to adjust the placement of the arms to ensure that they are properly positioned on the sides of the body. The arms will require 5 sts each and should be positioned on the sides of the body. There will be 7 sts between each arm on both the front and back of the body.
For example, if you only need 3 sts at the start of the round to get to the appropriate placement for the first arm, you will then crochet the arm in place with 5 sts, work the next 7 sts, crochet the second arm in place with 5 sts, and then complete the round with 4 sts; still completing the round with 24 sts in total.
R20: 1 SC in each of the next 5 sts. Place the first arm, and working through both the sts of the arm and the sts of the body, 1 SC in the next 5 sts. 1 SC in each of the next 7 sts. Tips & Tricks for Perfecting Your Crochet Gingerbread Man
- Invisible Decreases: When working your SC2tog stitches, always use the invisible decrease method for amigurumi. This is crucial for maintaining the smooth, clean look of the head and body in your crochet gingerbread man pattern.
- Creating Crisp “Icing”: The white trim (the “icing”) on the arms and legs should be made using the invisible color change method to prevent any noticeable steps in colors.
- More Ideas: For even more project improvement tips, check out my list of amigurumi tips and tricks.
Gingerbread Pattern Alterations & Customizations
- Change the Size (Chunky Yarn): Using a chunky or bulky yarn, such as Parfait Chunky, will create a much larger gingerbread man amigurumi. This is a great way to make a big-plush toy or a huggable pillow, all while still benefiting from the nearly no-sew construction. Be sure to use an appropriate hook size with whatever yarn you choose.
- Create a Gingerbread Girl: Easily turn Gerry into a gingerbread girl by changing the accessory placement. Swap the neck bow tie for a cute hair bow placed on the top side of the head.
- Customize the “Icing”: Don’t be limited to white! Use different colors for the white icing to match your holiday decor, or even use a specialty yarn like a fuzzy white for a textured “icing” look.
