SC2tog (using invisible decrease method): Insert hook into front loop of the first stitch. Insert hook into front loop of second stitch. Yarn over. Draw through the first two loops on hook. Yarn over. Draw through both loops on hook.
Notes
- Checking your gauge is not required for this pattern. Use a hook that is smaller than the size recommended for your yarn weight. This will ensure that your stuffing will not show through the stitches.
- All pieces are worked in the round. Use a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of each round.
- Invisible decreases are recommended. Please see “Special Stitches”.
- Safety eyes and noses post a chocking risk for babies; therefore, if making this toy for a baby, I recommend using yarn, felt, or embroidered details.
- All pieces require full stuffing. Stuff as you work to ensure each piece is completely filled.
- See tutorial photos.
Pattern
Using 4.0mm (G) crochet hook:
Head
Using color A (shown as white):
R1: Begin with 6 SC in a magic ring. (6 sts)
R2: 2 SC in each st around. (12 sts)
R3: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (18 sts)
R4: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. (24 sts)
R5: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 3 sts. Repeat from * around. (30 sts)
R6-10: 1 SC in each st around. (30 sts)
R11: *SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 3 sts. Repeat from * around. (24 sts)
If using safety eyes, insert 9mm eyes between R9-10, with 4 sts between.
To create the mouth, insert four 6mm safety eyes between R4-6 in an upward curve.
Using color B (shown as blue):
R12: Working in the front loops only, 1 HDC in each st around. (24 sts)
R13: Working in the third loop of the HDC, *SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. (18 sts)
R14: 1 SC in each st around. (18 sts)
Fill with stuffing.
R15: *SC2tog, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (12 sts)
R16: *SC2tog. Repeat from * around. (6 sts)
Leaving long strand, weave in and out of remaining sts and pull tight to close. Fasten off.
Pom Pom
Using blue yarn, make a pom pom. Start by wrapping blue yarn around your pointer and middle fingers about 10 times. With a 6 inch piece of yarn, thread between your fingers and tie around the middle of the wrapped yarn. Remove your fingers and cut the loops of the yarn. Trim the pom pom. See tutorial photos.
Attach pom pom to the top of the hat.
Carrot Nose
Using color C (shown as orange):
R1: Ch 4, sl st in second ch from hook, SC in next st, HDC in next st.
Leave strand for sewing. Fasten off.
Attach nose to the front of the face over R7-8.
Embroidery
Using color D (shown as pink), embroider blush between R7-8 over 2 sts on each side of the mouth.
