Elanna the Unicorn – Free Crochet Pattern

Meet Elanna the Unicorn, a sweet and small amigurumi designed specifically with babies and toddlers in mind. Whether you are looking for a quick baby shower gift or a soft addition to a nursery, this free crochet baby unicorn pattern comes together quickly using simple stitches.

When I designed Elanna, I wanted to create a toy that was both adorable and completely baby-friendly. Instead of using plastic safety eyes, this pattern uses simple embroidered sleeping eyes, making it soft, safe, and gentle for little ones. The leg construction is worked seamlessly into the body, cutting down on sewing and creates a sturdy, durable toy that can handle lots of baby snuggles!

At a Glance: Elanna the Unicorn Crochet Pattern

To crochet Elanna the Unicorn amigurumi, you will work in continuous rounds for the body and legs (which are worked as one piece), as well as the ears and horn. The hair curls are worked with a chain and increasing stitches. This baby-safe crochet unicorn is beginner-friendly and comes together quickly!

  • Required Skills: Magic ring, or magic ring alternative, single crochet (SC), SC decrease (SC2tog), chain (ch), slip stitch (sl st).
  • Yarn: Medium (4) worsted weight yarn in white, varying shades for the hair curls and accent colors. Or feel free to use a plush/chenille yarn for a bigger, extra squishy version!
  • Hook Size: 4.0mm (G) crochet hook, or whatever size works best for your chosen yarn so that your stitches are tight and stuffing doesn’t show through.
  • Finished Size: Small handheld toy size, perfect for tiny baby hands to grasp!

Abbreviations

st = stitch
sl st = slip stitch
ch = chain
SC = single crochet
SC2tog = single crochet 2 stitches together (invisible decrease is recommended)

Special Stitches

SC2tog (using invisible decrease method): Insert hook into front loop of the first stitch. Insert hook into front loop of second stitch. Yarn over. Draw through the first two loops on hook. Yarn over. Draw through both loops on hook.

Notes

  • Checking your gauge is not required for this pattern. Use a hook that is smaller than the size recommended for your yarn weight. This will ensure that your stuffing will not show through the stitches.
  • All pieces, with the exception of the curls, are worked in the round. Use a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of each round.
  • Invisible decreases are recommended. Please see “Special Stitches”.
  • Safety eyes and noses pose a choking risk for babies; therefore, if making this toy for a baby, I recommend using yarn, felt, or embroidered details.
  • Head/body requires stuffing. Stuff each piece as you work to ensure the piece is completely filled.

Pattern

Using 4.0mm (G) hook:

Head/Body

Using color A (shown as white):

R1: Begin with 6 SC in a magic ring. (6 sts)

R2: 2 SC in each st around. (12 sts)

R3: *1 SC in each of the next 3 sts, 2 SC in each of the next 3 sts. Repeat from * around. (18 sts)

R4: 1 SC in each of the next 5 sts, 2 SC in each of the next 2 sts, 1 SC in each of the next 7 sts, 2 SC in each of the next 2 sts, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts. (22 sts)

R5: 1 SC in next st, 2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 4 sts, 2 SC in each of the next 2 sts, 1 SC in each of the next 4 sts, 2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 4 sts, 2 SC in each of the next 2 sts, 1 SC in each of the next 3 sts. (28 sts)

R6: 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts, 2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 5 sts, 2 SC in each of the next 2 sts, 1 SC in each of the next 6 sts, 2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 5 sts, 2 SC in each of the next 2 sts. 1 SC in each of the next 4 sts. (34 sts)

R7: 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts [2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 7 sts, 2 SC in each of the next 2 sts], 1 SC in each of the next 7 sts. Repeat [ ] once. 1 SC in each of the next 5 sts. (40 sts)

R8-18: 1 SC in each st around. (40 sts)

Do not fasten off. Begin first leg.

First Leg

R19: 1 SC in each of the next 3 sts. Place a stitch marker in the next st (for reference with second leg). Skip the next 20 sts and 1 SC in the 21st st from hook (working across the opening of head to create first leg). 1 SC in each of the remaining 16 sts to beginning. (20 sts)

Using color B (shown as purple):

R24-25: 1 SC in each st around. (20 sts)

R26: *SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 8 sts. Repeat from * around. (18 sts)

R27: *SC2tog, 1 SC in next st, Repeat from * around. (12 sts)

R28: *SC2tog. Repeat from * around. (6 sts)

Cut yarn, leaving long strand. Weave yarn in and out of remaining sts. Pull tight to close. Tie off and weave in ends.

Fill first leg and body with stuffing.

Second Leg

R19: Beginning in the st of the body with the st marker, work 1 SC in each st around to beginning. (20 sts)

R20-23: 1 SC in each st around. (20 sts)

Using color B (shown as purple):

R24-25: 1 SC in each st around. (20 sts)

R26: *SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 8 sts. Repeat from * around. (18 sts)

Fill leg with stuffing.

R27: *SC2tog, 1 SC in next st, Repeat from * around. (12 sts)

R28: *SC2tog. Repeat from * around. (6 sts)

Cut yarn, leaving long strand. Weave yarn in and out of remaining sts. Pull tight to close. Tie off and weave in ends.

Sew the open space between the two legs.

Ears (make 2)

Using color A (shown as white):

R1: Begin with 4 SC in a magic ring. (4 sts)

R2: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (6 sts)

R3: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (9 sts)

R4: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. (12 sts)

R5-6:1 SC in each st around. (12 sts)

R7: *SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. (9 sts)

R8: Fold the ear closed, leaving 1 unworked st at the beginning of the fold. Working through both sides, to close the ear, 1 SC in each st across, leaving 2 unworked sts at the end of the fold. (3 sts) See tutorial photos.

Insert hook through the remaining 2 unworked sts, pinch the bottom of the ear to bring each end together, and working through both sides, join the ear with 1 SC. See tutorial photos.

The main part of the ear has been completed, and you will now be crocheting the ear closed.
The crochet hook is inserted through the first stitch and the stitch directly across from it, which is where the first single crochet will be made.
The ear has been crocheted closed all the way across, except for the final remaining stitch which remains unworked.
The crochet hook has been inserted into the final remaining stitch of the round of the hear.
The ear has been folded across and the crochet hook is now also pushed through the first stitch of the round to solidify the folded appearance. This is where the final single crochet will be worked.
The final single crochet stitch has been worked and the small crochet ear has a pinched appearance.

Horn

Using color C (shown as yellow):

R1: Begin with 4 SC in a magic ring. (4 sts)

R2: 1 SC in each st around. (4 sts)

R3: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (6 sts)

R4-6: 1 SC in each st around. (6 sts)

Cut yarn, leaving long strand for sewing. Fasten off.

Hair Curls A

Using color D (shown as mint):

R1: Ch 20, 2 SC in second ch from hook, and each ch to beginning. Do not fasten off. (38 sts)

R2: Ch 20, 2 SC in second ch from hook, and each ch to beginning. Do not fasten off. (38 sts)

R3: Ch 20, 2 SC in second ch from hook, and each ch to beginning. Do not fasten off. (38 sts)

R4: Ch 20, 2 SC in second ch from hook, and each ch to beginning. Do not fasten off. (38 sts)

The first hair curl has been made, but do not fasten off.
A chain of stitches has been made while still connected to the first curl.
The second hair curl has been made and is attached to the first curl.
Another chain and subsequent curl stitches were made, creating three hair curls, all attached.
Another chain and subsequent curl stitches were made, creating four hair curls that are all connected.

Cut yarn, leaving long strand for sewing. Fasten off.

Hair curl A has been completed in a mint yarn with a total of four curls.

Hair Curls B

Using color B (shown as purple):

R1: Ch 20, 2 SC in second ch from hook, and each ch to beginning. Do not fasten off. (38 sts)

R2: Ch 20, 2 SC in second ch from hook, and each ch to beginning. Do not fasten off. (38 sts)

R3: Ch 20, 2 SC in second ch from hook, and each ch to beginning. Do not fasten off. (38 sts)

Cut yarn, leaving long strand for sewing. Fasten off.

Hair Curl B has been completed in a purple yarn with a total of 3 curls attached.

Hair Curls C

Using color E (shown as pink):

R1: Ch 20, 2 SC in second ch from hook, and each ch to beginning. Do not fasten off. (38 sts)

R2: Ch 20, 2 SC in second ch from hook, and each ch to beginning. Do not fasten off. (38 sts)

Cut yarn, leaving long strand for sewing. Fasten off.

Hair Curl C has been completed in a pink yarn with a total of two curls attached.

Attach ears to each side of the top of the head over R6.

Attach curl A to the back of the head diagonally, behind the horn and ears. Attach curl B to the back of the head diagonally, running on top of the previous curl in the opposite direction. Attach curl C to the back of the head diagonally, running on top of the previous curl in the opposite direction.

Embroider eyes by making a line between R9-10, over 5 sts each, dipping down two rows with two points anchoring the line to create the curve. See tutorial photos.

  1. I can’t find anywhere in your Elanna Unicorn pattern on how to attach the hair curls. Could you please help.

      You will sew the hair just behind the horn, as desired. This is one of my first patterns, so it unfortunately does not have the extensive photo tutorials that I am known for. I am, however, slowly working on updating those patterns to include them, so I hope to have them added soon!

  2. Your pattern for the hair as written doesn’t make the curls. It needs to be 2sc in second st from the hook, SC. 2SC. SC. Repeat * till the end of the row.

    1. It does. My curls are made with 2 SC in each stitch, which would give a tighter curl. Your suggested method would still create a curl, but it would be more loose. ????
