I don’t know about you, but giraffes are always one of my favorites to visit at the zoo. That’s why I’m so happy to share Gerald the Giraffe, a free giraffe crochet pattern! I’ve been wanting to add a crochet giraffe amigurumi to my pattern collection for a while, and I’m thrilled with how this sweet face and classic spots turned out.

This giraffe crochet pattern is designed to work up quickly and uses simple stitches, making it a perfect project for those new to making amigurumi. While I designed Gerald in worsted weight yarn, he looks great in a variety of fibers and weights. I even made a rainbow version to show you!

Gerald the Giraffe amigurumi sitting on a white faux fur background. This free giraffe crochet pattern features a yellow body with dark brown spots, hooves, and horns, and a light cream snout.

I would classify this free giraffe crochet pattern as “advanced beginner”. It would be helpful to have had some experience with amigurumi before creating this project.

I hope you enjoy this free crochet pattern available here on my blog! An ad-free, formatted PDF version of this crochet pattern is also available for purchase here:

Hook Size: 4.0mm (G) crochet hook
Other Tools: tapestry needle, stitch markers, scissors

Stitch Abbreviations

st = stitch
sl st = slip stitch
ch = chain
SC = single crochet
SC2tog = single crochet 2 stitches together (invisible decrease is recommended)

Special Stitches

SC2tog (using invisible decrease method): Insert hook into front loop of the first stitch. Insert hook into front loop of second stitch. Yarn over. Draw through the first two loops on hook. Yarn over. Draw through both loops on hook.

Notes

  • Checking your gauge is not required for this pattern. Use a hook that is smaller than the size recommended for your yarn weight. This will ensure that your stuffing will not show through the stitches.
  • All pieces, with the exception of the tail, are worked in the round. Use a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of each round.
  • Invisible decreases are recommended. Please see “Special Stitches”.
  • Safety eyes and noses pose a choking risk for babies; therefore, if making this toy for a baby, I recommend using yarn, felt, or embroidered details.
  • Body, head, legs, and arms require stuffing. Stuff each piece as you work to ensure the piece is completely filled. Do not add stuffing to the ears or tail.
  • See tutorial photos.

Tips for Success with Gerald

  • Track Your Rounds: Since this free amigurumi giraffe pattern is worked in continuous rounds, I highly recommend using a stitch marker to keep track of the first stitch of each round. This ensures your stitch counts remain accurate and your spots line up correctly!
  • The Invisible Decrease: When making your crochet giraffe, use the invisible decrease method for your SC2tog stitches. This technique prevents the gaps that often occur with standard decreases, giving your finished toy a professional look.
  • Need More Help? If you are new to making toys, take a look at my comprehensive list of amigurumi tips and tricks for more insight on tension, stuffing, and more that will be helpful for this free giraffe crochet pattern.

Customize Your Crochet Giraffe

  • Want a Large Giraffe? You can easily create a large giraffe crochet pattern free of extra math by simply swapping your yarn! I love using a plush yarn like Parfait Chunky paired with a comparable hook size (such as 5.0mm). You will follow this free giraffe crochet pattern exactly as written, but the result will be a much bigger, squishier version of Gerald.
  • Rainbow Giraffe: For a whimsical twist, try using a self-striping yarn or scrap yarn in rainbow colors. This is a great way to use up your stash while making a unique crochet giraffe amigurumi.
  • The Perfect Baby Gift: This design was created to coordinate perfectly with my crochet giraffe lovey pattern for the perfect baby shower gift!

    1. Thank you! I don’t have a design for a larger version at this point, so adjusting the yarn and hook size would be the only way to make it larger. 🙂

    1. Thanks so much! Sorry, I haven’t made it in that yarn so I’m not sure. You could check on Ravelry to see if there are any projects for it made in that yarn though!

  1. Loved this, he turned out so cute! I’m giving him to a friend that loves giraffes. Instructions were very clear, thank you for the visuals as well. It helps a lot.
