Byron Bear – Free Crochet Pattern

I love making amigurumi, but I always find myself saving the sewing and assembly for last. I kept that in mind when designing this crochet teddy bear pattern, Byron Bear. I never get tired of a classic teddy bear, and I love that this bear amigurumi is minimal sewing. 

 Byron Bear is crocheted from the legs up. You will first start with crocheting the arms and then set them aside. The legs, body, and head are all worked continuously as one piece, and the arms are crocheted directly into the body as you work. That means that the only sewing required is for the ears and snout for this free crochet teddy bear pattern! 

A timeless bear amigurumi would make such a great gift for kids of any age! Crochet bears are also a great baby shower option, especially when you need a gender neutral option. 

I personally love Tweed yarn, so when I saw this Provincial Tweed yarn from WeCrochet, I knew I just had to use it for a crochet bear pattern. Provincial Tweed is a worsted weight yarn, but it is a bit on the thin side in comparison to other medium weight yarns, so keep that in mind if you are wanting Byron to be a specific height. 

After you find the perfect yarn for your crochet bear, you’ll need a 3.75mm crochet hook, tapestry needle/yarn needle, scissors, safety eyes and safety nose (if desired), and poly-fil stuffing. You can find all of these items on my Amazon page in the crochet section.

Byron Bear

ABBREVIATIONS

st = stitch
sl st = slip stitch
SC = single crochet
SC2tog = single crochet 2 stitches together (invisible decrease is recommended)

SPECIAL STITCHES

SC2tog (using invisible decrease method): Insert hook into front loop of the first stitch. Insert hook into front loop of second stitch. Yarn over. Draw through the first two loops on hook. Yarn over. Draw through both loops on hook.

NOTES

• Checking your gauge is not required for this pattern. Use a hook that is smaller than the size recommended for your yarn weight. This will ensure that your stuffing will not show through the stitches.

• This pattern requires minimal sewing. The legs, body, and head are all worked as one piece, and the arms are worked directly into the body as you work, rather than sewing later. The only sewing required is the snout and the ears.
• All pieces are worked in the round. Use a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of each round.
• Legs, body, head, and snout all require full stuffing. Stuff as you work to ensure each piece is completely filled. Only add a small amount of stuffing to the arms, within the hand area. Do not add stuffing to the ears.
• *Note that the yarn I used for this pattern is slightly thinner than a typical medium (4) weight yarn; therefore, if using an alternative, be aware that you will likely need approximately 200 yards.

PATTERN

Arms (make 2)

R1: Begin with 6 SC in a magic ring. (6 sts)

R2: 2 SC in each st around. (12 sts)

R3: 2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next st. Repeat around. (18 sts)

R4: 2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat around. (24 sts)

R5-7: 1 SC in each st around. (24 sts)

R8: SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat around. (18 sts)

R9: 1 SC in each st around. (18 sts)

R10: SC2tog, 1 SC in next st. Repeat around. (12 sts)

R11-23: 1 SC in each st around. (12 sts)

Add a small amount of stuffing to the arms, within the hand area.

R24: Fold the arm closed. Working through both sides, to close the arm, 1 SC in each st across, leaving 1 unworked st on each side. (5 sts)

Cut yarn, leaving long strand for sewing. Fasten off.

First Leg

R1: Begin with 6 SC in a magic ring. (6 sts)

R2: 2 SC in each st around. (12 sts)

R3: 2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next st. Repeat around. (18 sts)

R4-10: 1 SC in each st around. (18 sts)

Fasten off.

Second Leg

R1: Begin with 6 SC in a magic ring. (6 sts)

R2: 2 SC in each st around. (12 sts)

R3: 2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next st. Repeat around. (18 sts)

R4-10: 1 SC in each st around. (18 sts)

R11: Ch 3. Join to first leg. SC in each st around first leg, across ch 3, around second leg, back across ch 3, to beginning. (42 sts)

R12-13: 1 SC in each st around. (42 sts)

Fill the legs with stuffing.

You are now shaping the body.

Body

R14: 2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 6 sts. Repeat around. (48 sts)

R15: 1 SC in each st around. (48 sts)

R16: 2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 7 sts. Repeat around. (54 sts)

R17: 1 SC in each of the next 18 sts, *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts, repeat from * an additional 5 times, 1 SC in each of the next 18 sts. (60 sts)

R18: 1 SC in each st around. (60 sts)

R19: 1 SC in each of the next 15 sts, *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 4 sts, repeat from * an additional 5 times, 1 SC in each of the next 15 sts. (66 sts)

R20-26: 1 SC in each st around. (66 sts)

R27: SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 9 sts. Repeat around. (60 sts)

R28: 1 SC in each st around. (60 sts)

R68: SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 5 sts. Repeat around. (36 sts)

R69: SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 4 sts. Repeat around. (30 sts)

R70: SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 3 sts. Repeat around. (24 sts)

R71: SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat around. (18 sts)

Fill the head with stuffing.

R72: SC2tog, 1 SC in the next st. Repeat around. (12 sts)

R73: SC2tog. Repeat around. (6 sts)

Cut yarn, weave yarn in and out of remaining sts. Pull tight to close. Weave in ends.

Snout

R1: Begin with 6 SC in a magic ring. (6 sts)

R2: 2 SC in each st around. (12 sts)

R3: 2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next st. Repeat around. (18 sts)

R4: 2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat around. (24 sts)

R5: 2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 3 sts. Repeat around. (30 sts)

R6-8: 1 SC in each st around. (30 sts)

Cut yarn, leaving long strands for sewing. Fasten off.

Fill with stuffing.

Ears (make 2)

R1: Begin with 6 SC in a magic ring. (6 sts)

R2: 2 SC in each st around. (12 sts)

R3: 2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next st. Repeat around. (18 sts)

R4: 2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat around. (24 sts)

R5-7: 1 SC in each st around. (24 sts)

R8: SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat around. (18 sts)

R9: SC2tog, 1 SC in next st. Repeat around. (12 sts)

Cut yarn, leaving long strands for sewing. Fasten off.

ASSEMBLY & FINISHING

If using safety nose, insert nose between R3-4 of snout.

Stuff snout and attach to front of head between R49 and R59.

Fold the ears in half and attach on either side of the top of the head, at approximately R62-69.

*Note: Safety eyes and noses pose a choking risk for babies; therefore, if making this toy for a baby, I recommend using yarn, felt, or embroidered details.
