Foundation Single Crochet – Crochet Stitch Tutorial

Have you ever started a project with a long chain, just to realize that you chained too many/not enough when working your single crochet row? I have the solution for you… the Foundation Single Crochet Stitch!

This crochet stitch has so many benefits that the typical chain + single crochet method. One of those benefits is that it eliminates the bunching that happens on that first row when your chain is too tight. That starting chain can be tricky, and it often doesn’t have enough stretch to match the rest of the project.

I use the FSC for the Frill piece of my Tanner the Triceratops pattern, and I often get questions on how to do this stitch, so I decided to put together this stitch tutorial.

The FSC stitch is interesting to me, because unlike the traditional method of chaining the desired amount, and then SC across, the FSC stitch is essentially creating a chain with a SC on top of it, one at a time.

Begin with a slip knot.

Ch 2.

SC in second ch from your hook.

Insert your hook into the same ch stitch that you just worked the SC, and draw up a loop. Yarn over and draw through the first stitch on your hook, creating another ch stitch.

Yarn over and draw through both stitches on your hook, creating your second SC stitch.

You’ll then continue on by inserting your hook into the last ch stitch created, yarn over, and drawing up a loop (creating another ch stitch). Then you will yarn over and draw through both stitches on your hook, creating another SC stitch.

You are essentially creating a base ch, with a SC on top of it, but instead of doing one long ch, followed by several SC, you are doing one ch and one SC at a time.
