I’ve got your next favorite amigurumi project right here! Meet Gwen the Silly Goose. When I started designing this free goose crochet pattern, I was heavily inspired by the iconic porch goose trend. There is something so nostalgic and charming about those dressed-up geese, and I knew I wanted to create a soft, huggable version!
One of my favorite things about Gwen is her versatility. While I designed her in worsted weight yarn, she looks equally adorable in plush chenille yarn, or even a thinner weight yarn. I’ve included a section on alterations at the end of this post with specific yarn and hook recommendations for creating a whole family of geese in different sizes with this beginner-friendly pattern.

Table of Contents
I would classify this free goose crochet pattern as “advanced beginner”. It would be helpful to have had some experience with amigurumi before creating this project.

Free Crochet Pattern for Gwen the Silly Goose

Pattern Specifics
Measurements: Approximately 6.5″ tall
Gauge: Not necessary for this pattern; see notes
Hook Size: 4.0mm (G) crochet hook
Other Tools: tapestry needle, stitch markers, scissors
Yarn Weight: Medium (4) Worsted Weight
Yarn Used: WeCrochet/Knit Picks Brava Worsted
Yardage: color A (orange): 12 yds, color B (white): 66 yds
Other Materials: poly-fil stuffing, 9mm safety eyes
Abbreviations
st = stitch
sl st = slip stitch
ch = chain
SC = single crochet
SC2tog = single crochet 2 stitches together (invisible decrease is recommended)
Special Stitches
SC2tog (using invisible decrease method): Insert hook into front loop of the first stitch. Insert hook into front loop of second stitch. Yarn over. Draw through the first two loops on hook. Yarn over. Draw through both loops on hook.
Notes
- Checking your gauge is not required for this pattern. Use a hook that is smaller than the size recommended for your yarn weight. This will ensure that your stuffing will not show through the stitches.
- All pieces are worked in the round. Use a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of each round.
- Invisible decreases are recommended. Please see “Special Stitches”.
- Safety eyes and noses pose a choking risk for babies; therefore, if making this toy for a baby, I recommend using yarn, felt, or embroidered details.
- Body, neck, head, beak, and tail require stuffing. Stuff each piece as you work to ensure the piece is completely filled. Do not add stuffing to the wings or feet.
- See tutorial photos.

Assembly & Finishing
See tutorial photos.
Attach beak to the front of the head, between the eyes, over R9-12.

Attach wings over R26-34, leaving about 6 sts between each wing. Secure in the middle of each wing as well to ensure the wings stay facing the back of the body.

Attach tail between R35-36 of the back of the body and secure in the middle to ensure that the tail stays facing upright.

Attach feet to the bottom of the body right next to each other. Secure in the middle of each foot to ensure that the feet stay facing outward.

Expert Tips for Success
- Proper Sewing Placement: When sewing your crochet goose pieces together, I recommend using pins to secure the beak, wings, and feet in place. Pins prevent the pieces from shifting, ensuring your goose doesn’t end up with sideways pieces!
- Seamless Rounds: Since we are working in continuous rounds for this free crochet goose pattern, a stitch marker is essential. I always place mine in the first stitch of the round so I never lose my place.

Make it Your Own: Customizing Gwen
- Plush & Oversized: For a large, extra-huggable crochet goose, swap out the worsted weight yarn for a plush yarn like Parfait Chunky. Pair your yarn with a suitable hook size for that yarn to keep your stitches tight and the stuffing hidden. My large plush goose below was made with Parfait Chunky and a 5.0mm (H) crochet hook.
- Miniature Goose: If you prefer a tiny desk companion, try using a lighter weight yarn like Animation and a smaller hook. My small goose below was made in Animation cotton yarn and a 2.75mm (C) crochet hook.
- Seasonal Style: Lean into the porch goose trend by dressing Gwen up! You can easily crochet a small hat or tie a festive ribbon around her neck to match the changing seasons or your home decor.

Hi Nicole,
I’m currently half way through your goose pattern and I already love it! Quick question- if I stuff the body with the usual stuffing will she end up top heavy and unable to stand because of the neck/head length? Do you advise stuffing the body with something weightier or do you think it’ll be alright?
Thanks!
So glad to hear that! I don’t do anything special with the stuffing, just fill as usual. The feet and tail help to keep the goose sitting upright. Hope that helps!
