I’m so excited to shar Flora the Flamingo, my latest free flamingo crochet pattern. This amigurumi flamingo was designed with simple construction, making it a great project for beginners. While I originally designed Flora using a standard worsted weight yarn, but I’ve found she looks equally adorable in a variety of yarns.

A side by side comparison of Flora the Flamingo amigurumi projects. Both flamingos feature safety eyes, a white and black beak, and grey legs. The crochet flamingo on the left has a variegated yarn, while the one on the right shows a solid finish.

I would classify this free flamingo crochet pattern as “advanced beginner”. It would be helpful to have had some experience with amigurumi before creating this project.

I hope you enjoy this free crochet pattern available here on my blog! An ad-free, formatted PDF version of this crochet pattern is also available for purchase here:

Special Stitches

SC2tog (using invisible decrease method): Insert hook into front loop of the first stitch. Insert hook into front loop of second stitch. Yarn over. Draw through the first two loops on hook. Yarn over. Draw through both loops on hook.

Notes

  • Checking your gauge is not required for this pattern. Use a hook that is smaller than the size recommended for your yarn weight. This will ensure that your stuffing will not show through the stitches.
  • All pieces, with the exception of the hair, are worked in the round. Use a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of each round.
  • Invisible decreases are recommended. Please see “Special Stitches”.
  • Safety eyes and noses pose a choking risk for babies; therefore, if making this toy for a baby, I recommend using yarn, felt, or embroidered details.
  • Body, head, beak, tail, and legs require stuffing. Stuff each piece as you work to ensure the piece is completely filled. Do not add stuffing to the wings or feet.
  • See tutorial photos.

Tips for Success with Flora the Flamingo

  • Track Your Rounds: Because this amigurumi flamingo is worked in continuous rounds, it is easy to lose your place. I highly recommend using a stitch marker or clip to mark the first stitch of every row to ensure your stitch counts remain accurate.
  • Invisible Decrease: To avoid gaps in your fabric where stuffing might peek through use the invisible decrease method for every SC2tog in this free flamingo crochet pattern. This technique is essential for achieving a professional, smooth finish on the piece.
  • Master the Basics: If you are new to amigurumi or want to level up your skills, check out my comprehensive guide on amigurumi tips and tricks.

Customizing Your Flamingo

One of the best things about the Flora the Flamingo amigurumi design is how easily she can be customized to fit your personal style or a specific nursery theme. Here are a few ways you can put your own spin on this free flamingo crochet pattern.

  • Experiment with Yarn Weight: While the pattern was designed for medium worsted weight yarn, you can scale Flora up or down by changing your yarn choice. Try a fine weight yarn for a tiny keychain-sized flamingo, or a bulky weight yarn, such as Parfait Chunky or Bernat Blanket. Just remember to pair your chosen yarn with the appropriate hook size.
  • Play with Color Palettes: Flamingos don’t always have to be a classic pink! For a unique look, try working Flora in a soft peach, a vibrant coral, or even a variegated yarn for a “feathered” texture, and use a contrasting color for the wings can also make the details pop.
  • Beak & Leg Variations: While I love the classic black and white beak, you could use a dark grey or a cream for a softer look. Changing the leg color to a lighter tan to give your amigurumi flamingo a different personality.

  1. Fantastic pattern, thank you!

I modified the feet to look slightly more flamingo like:

    Foot:
6 SC in a magic circle
SC in next stitch, chain 3, SC back down the chain, repeat 3x
Finish the round with SC and then fasten off, leaving a long tail

    Leg:
6 SC in a magic circle
SC around for about 12 rounds
Fold in half and SC across top

Sew the foot to the bottom of the leg (where the magic circle was) and then sew the leg to the body.

This gives a 3-toed foot with some webbing in between.
