Quick Note for Beginners
Are you new to patterns? Crochet patterns are simply the instructions for creating a crochet project using yarn and a hook. If you’re a beginner who started with video tutorials, learning to read a written pattern can feel overwhelming. Don’t worry, my detailed post on learning how to read a crochet pattern will help you get started right away!
1. Trusted Independent Crochet Pattern Designer Blogs
Starting off the list of where to find free crochet patterns are independent crochet pattern designers that share their crochet patterns for free on their blog or website. These sites are run by real people, not AI-generated content, who invest their time and expertise in creating reliable, tested instructions.
You may be wondering what benefit a designed may have to share their patterns for free? After all, it does cost money to operate a website and purchase supplies to make the project in the first place! Independent designers can earn from the ads that are placed on their website. So every time you visit a crochet designer’s website, you are helping to support their business.
There are SO many pattern designers out there, so I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorite crochet pattern designers covering a variety of project types!
My Favorite Independent Crochet Pattern Designers
- Amigurumi
- Nicole Chase – amigurumi and more!
- Cilla Crochets – amigurumi
- Repeat Crafter Me – amigurumi, blankets
- Wonder Crochet – amigurumi
- The Friendly Red Fox – amigurumi
- Wearables
- Divine Debris – wearables, decor
- Make & Do Crew – wearables
- Evelyn & Peter – wearables, accessories
- Accessories, Decor, & Miscellaneous
- A Crafty Concept – accessories, decor
- Moogly – accessories, blankets
2. Yarn Company Free Pattern Archives
Yarn company websites are one of the most reliable and trusted sources to find free crochet patterns. Most major yarn brands host huge archives that include free patterns, paid patterns, and crochet kits. These patterns are typically high-quality, as they are often commissioned by the company or crated by their own in-house design team, ensuring they are tested and accurate for their specific yarns.
My very favorite yarn company is crochet.com! I’ve had the pleasure of designing patterns for their magazine and collections. They are a great free crochet pattern source because they offer both free and paid patterns, along with their amazing yarns.
Here are some of my favorite yarn companies and their free pattern libraries:
3. Ravelry: The Best Crochet Pattern Database
Ravelry is absolutely the best place to begin your search for free crochet patterns! Essentially a pattern library for crocheters and knitters, Ravelry allows designers, yarn companies, and publishers to list their designs. The listings provide comprehensive details, photos, and clear links on where to find the pattern. Free patterns can either be downloaded as a PDF directly from Ravelry or linked to view on the designer’s blog.
Ravelry is widely known as one of the safest marketplaces for patterns as well. Because it is a highly specialized, community-driven database with active moderation, it has successfully avoided the surge of unusable AI-generate, or stolen patterns that plague other general marketplaces.
Ravelry requires a simple account to browse, but the best benefit is that you can keep all of your patterns (free or purchased) stored safely in your Ravelry library. My most-used feature is the project diary, where you can keep a detailed record of your supplies, yarn usage, and photos, linking it directly to the pattern you used.

Tip: When browsing Ravelry for patterns, be sure to check the box for “Crochet” and the “Free” filter under availability. This will instantly narrow down the results.

Note: Some crochet patterns listed on Ravelry will have both a free version (linked to a webpage), and a paid PDF version available for purchase. If you open a listing that shows a price, don’t fret! Just below the pricing box, as well as at the top of the description, you will see a “free” label with a link to the designer’s blog where the pattern is available at no cost.

4. Ribblr: Interactive Crochet Patterns
A relatively new resource for where to find free crochet patterns is Ribblr! Ribblr is similar to Ravelry, in that independent pattern designers can list their work, but it is unique in its focus on interactive digital patterns.
Ribblr’s features include:
- Line-by-Line Tracking: Users can track their progress with each row or round with a simple tap, and your spot is saved and synced across all devices.
- Accessibility Tools: Ribblr is designed to be highly accessible, offering features like dark mode, adjustable font sizes, etc.
- Built-in Tutorials: Some patterns include clickable links within the pattern instructions leading directly to video tutorials for specific stitches.
- Smart Sizing: You can often select your size and only see the instructions relevant to that size, decluttering the pattern view.
If you prefer to work from a tablet or phone, Ribblr is a great place for finding free crochet patterns.
5. Social Media Communities
These platforms are less about searching and more about following and community. Social media is a great place to get news of a designer’s new free pattern drop and to find real-life inspiration. Most independent designers maintain a presence on Instagram and Facebook, where they share news, behind-the-scenes content, and announce their latest designs.
- Instagram, Facebook, & TikTok: The best place to see viral, trending patterns and to get quick inspiration. Designers often share short video clips that direct you back to their free pattern blog posts.
- Facebook Groups: Excellent for finding free patterns and asking questions to a community of other crocheters.

6. YouTube Video Tutorials
YouTube is such a valuable resource for beginners when deciding where to find free crochet patterns. Especially if you are just starting out, full free crochet video tutorials will walk you through each step of the pattern before you’ve learned how to read a written pattern.
- Pro Tip: Find the Written Pattern: Even if you prefer video, always look in the video description box for the designer’s link to the corresponding free written pattern. This gives you both resources to follow along with!
- Pro Tip: Learn to Read Patterns: Once you are comfortable with video, you can transition to written instructions! My post on learning how to read a crochet pattern can help you master the symbols and terms.

7. Pinterest: Visual Search Engine
Next on the list of where to find free crochet patterns is Pinterest! This platform is an excellent resource for finding patterns, but it is essential to use it with caution.
Important: Verify the Source
You must be aware that with the uptick in AI-generated content, Pinterest can sometimes display misleading pins. There has been an increase in fake crochet images, often leading to unreliable sources or paid sites. Additionally, some sources have been known to use the image of others to solicit clicks to their own webpage (I have had this happen to me personally!).
Don’t let that deter you from using Pinterest! It is still a fantastic tool if you use it correctly.
- Pro Tip: Treat Pinterest like a search engine (not a social feed). Search for exactly what you want (“free amigurumi pattern”). When you find a pin you like, always click the image to check out the website to ensure the course is reliable and not a scammer.

8. Your Local Library Card (Physical & Digital Resources)
This is the ultimate hack for finding free crochet patterns! Your library card is one of the best, most underutilized resources for sourcing new designs, both physically and digitally.
Your local library already has plenty of crochet pattern books on their shelves that you can check out for free. If they don’t have what you’re looking for, they can probably borrow books from a larger network of libraries on your behalf.
- The Digital Secret: A vast number of libraries also offer digital options that can be accessed instantly with your library card. Apps like Libby (Overdrive) and CloudLibrary are home to plenty of crochet books and digital magazines that can be checked out electronically and accessed 24/7 from your phone, tablet, or Kindle.
Bonus: Free Crochet Pattern Tips
Use these final tips to get the best value from the resources above and ensure you are supporting the designers who provide free patterns:
- Sign Up for Freebies: Subscribe to a designer’s newsletter! This is the number one way to get the best deals, exclusive freebies, and be the first to hear about new pattern releases. You can subscribe to my newsletter for free pattern alerts here.
- Check the Designer’s Site: If you find a pattern listing that only shows a price for the PDF, always head to the designer’s website first. Many designers offer an identical, ad-supported free version on their blog.
- Show Your Appreciation: If you enjoyed a pattern, don’t be afraid to leave a comment on the free pattern post. Designers love receiving feedback about completed projects!
- Tag the Creator: When you share your finished project on social media or in a forum, show your appreciaton by tagging the designer! This helps others find and support their work.
Now that you have the ultimate list of best places to find free crochet patterns, I’m sure you have a never-ending project to-do list!
