Are you wondering where to find free crochet patterns? Whether you’ve been crocheting for years or you are just starting out, there are so many places to find crochet patterns! I’ve compiled a list of my favorite places to find free crochet patterns, and some tips and tricks to help you along the way.

Crochet patterns are the instructions for creating a crochet project using yarn and a crochet hook. If you’re a beginner, my post on learning how to read a crochet pattern may help you get started.

Independent Crochet Pattern Designers

Starting off the list of where to find free crochet patterns are independent crochet pattern designers. There are many designers that offer their crochet patterns for free on their blog or website.

You may be wondering what benefit a designer may have to share their patterns for free? After all, it does cost money to operate a website and purchase supplies to make the project in the first place! These designers can earn from the ads that are placed on their website. So every time that you visit the website of an independent designer, you are helping to support their business!

There are SO many pattern designers out there. Some that offer free patterns, some that don’t. So I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorite crochet pattern designers (including myself!) covering a variety of project types!

Yarn Companies – Yarn & Patterns

A reliable source to find free crochet patterns is often the website of yarn companies! Most yarn brands have a website that often include free crochet patterns, paid patterns, and crochet kits! These patterns can be from independent designers, commissioned by the company, or from the company’s own design team.

My very favorite yarn company is crochet.com! I’ve had the pleasure of designing patterns for their magazine and collections. Additionally, they offer a selection of free and paid patterns, along with their amazing yarns! Here are some of my favorite yarn companies and their free pattern libraries:

Ravelry – Pattern Database

Ravelry is my absolute favorite place to look for free crochet patterns! Ravelry is essentially a pattern library for crocheters and knitters, where designers, yarn companies, publishers, etc. will list their patterns. The listings include pattern details, photos, and where to find the pattern. Free patterns can either be downloaded in a PDF form directly from Ravelry, or will link directly to the free pattern.

Ravelry requires that you create an account in order to browse patterns, which is easy to set up. The best part about your Ravelry account is that you can keep all of your patterns in one place. Whether a pattern is free or purchased, you can keep them in your Ravelry library for safe-keeping. My most-used feature of Ravelry is the project diary, where you can keep a record of your project, including your yarn and other supplies, photos, and link it directly to the pattern that you used.

Tip: When browsing Ravelry for patterns, be sure to check the box for “Crochet” and “Free”.

Note: Some crochet patterns listed on Ravelry will have both a free version (linked to a webpage), and a paid PDF version (available for purchase). If you are browsing free patterns and open a listing that shows a price, don’t fret! Just below the pricing box, as well as the top of the description, will show the “Free” label with a link to the free pattern.

Ribblr – Interactive Patterns

A relatively new resource for where to find free crochet patterns is Ribblr! Ribblr is similar to Ravelry, in that independent pattern designers can list their patterns on the platform. However, it is unique in it’s interactive pattern interface, which allows users to track their progress with each row while using the pattern, add notes, and more.

Social Media

Another alterative for where to find free crochet patterns is social media! Most independent crochet designers maintain some form of a social media presence and will share the news of their latest free crochet patterns online.

Some creators will often share small/simple crochet pattern designs on social media, right in the post. Whether that be in the post image or in the caption.

Once you find the designers that you enjoy, be sure to follow them on places like Instagram and Facebook!

YouTube

Especially if you are a beginner, YouTube is a great place to start when wondering where to find free crochet patterns. Some crochet pattern designers will create full videos for their crochet patterns, which will walk you through each step of the process. This is a great place to start when you are first learning how to crochet, before you’ve learned how to read a crochet pattern.

Pinterest

Next on the list of where to find free crochet patterns is not surprisingly, Pinterest! Pinterest can be a great resource for finding crochet patterns. However, be aware the Pinterest can sometimes display misleading pins. With the use of AI images on the rise, there has been an increase in AI generated crochet images typically leading to unreliable sources.

Additionally, some sources have been known to use the images of others to solicit clicks to their own webpage. I have had this happen to me personally, where other websites have used my images to get traffic to their website.

With those cautions in mind, don’t let that deter you from using Pinterest! If you keep an eye out for those things to avoid, and follow creators that you are familiar with, Pinterest can be an excellent place to find free crochet patterns! You can follow me on Pinterest here.

Your Local Library

Your library card can benefit you in a lot of ways, and that’s why I’m sharing it here on my list of where to find free crochet patterns! Your local library likely already has some crochet pattern books on their shelves that you can check out for free. If they don’t have any on hand, your library is probably part of a larger network of libraries that they can borrow books from for you.

A lot of libraries also have digital options that can be accessed with your library card. Apps like Libby and CloudLibrary are home to plenty of crochet books and magazines that can be checked out electronically and accessed from your phone, tablet, or Kindle.

Free Crochet Pattern Tips

  • Some pattern designers offer freebies and discounts to their newsletter subscribers. Not only is this a great way to get the best deals, but you’ll also typically be the first group to hear about new pattern releases! You can subscribe to my newsletter for free pattern alerts.
  • As mentioned above, independent crochet designers often have free versions of patterns on their website. If you come across a paid PDF pattern and would prefer to save a couple bucks, head to the designer’s website to see if they offer an ad-supported version as well.
  • If you enjoyed a particular pattern, don’t be afraid to let the designer know! I love receiving comments on my free pattern posts about your completed projects.
  • If you share your finished project on social media or a forum, show your appreciation to the designer by tagging them so that others can support their patterns.
