Free Crochet Pattern for New Beginnings Cowl

Pattern Specifics
Size: Adult (one size)
Measurements: Approximately 13” wide, with a 26” circumference
Gauge: 4” = 6 V sts or 16 HDC sts, 2” = 4 V st rows or 5 HDC rows
Hook Size: 5.5mm (I) crochet hook

Abbreviations
st = stitch
sl st = slip stitch
ch = chain
SC = single crochet
HDC = half double crochet
DC = double crochet
V = V stitch
Special Stitches
V stitch: 1 DC, ch 1, 1 DC, all worked together in the same stitch
Notes
- Note that your yarn choice, hook size, and tension will affect the sizing of this project. Please check your gauge prior to starting this pattern. If you do not compare your gauge to that of the design, it is possible that your sizing will be affected.
- Chain 1 at the beginning of each HDC row does NOT count as a stitch (unless otherwise specified).
- Chain 3 at the beginning of each V stitch row does count as a stitch (unless otherwise specified).
- When working your first HDC row following a V stitch row, be sure to work your final HDC into the ch 3 space from the previous V stitch row to ensure proper stitch count.

Pattern
R1: Ch 49, working in 4th ch from hook, 1 DC, ch 1, 1 DC (V stitch), skip 2 sts, *work V in next ch st, skip 2 sts. Repeat from * to end, ending with a V in the last ch st. (16 V sts + ch 3)






R2-5: Ch 3, turn, V in each ch 1 space of V from previous row to end of row. 1 DC in the top of ch 3 from previous row. (ch 3 + 16 V sts + 1 DC)





R6: Ch 1, turn, 1 HDC in each st across. (50 sts)




R7-10: Ch 1, turn, working in the third loop of the HDC from previous row, work 1 HDC in each st across. (50 sts)







R11: Ch 3, turn, skip 2 sts, *work V in next st, skip 2 sts. Repeat from * to end, leaving 2 sts remaining. Skip 1 st, 1 DC in last st. (ch 3 + 17 V sts + 1 DC)







R12-15: Repeat R2-5. (ch 3 + 16 V sts + 1 DC)
R16-20: Repeat R6-10. (50 sts)
R21-25: Repeat R11-15. (ch 3 + 16 V sts + 1 DC)
R26-30: Repeat R6-10. (50 sts)
R31-35: Repeat R11-15. (ch 3 + 16 V sts + 1 DC)
R36-40: Repeat R6-10. (50 sts)
R41-45: Repeat R11-15. (ch 3 + 16 V sts + 1 DC)
R46-50: Repeat R6-10. (50 sts)
R51-55: Repeat R11-15. (ch 3 + 16 V sts + 1 DC)
R56-60: Repeat R6-10. (50 sts)
Bring both ends of cowl together and sl st to join.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Flip the cowl so that the sl st seam is hidden on the inside.

Simple Alterations for the Cowl Crochet Pattern

- Changing the Circumference/Length: Add or subtract repeats of R11-15 and R6-10 for a longer or shorter free cowl crochet pattern.
