I just love colorwork. I hope to design more patterns that incorporate color changes. This hat is great for beginners to try out colorwork for the first time, with a detailed looking result. For this pattern, you will need 5 different colors of yarn.
Back when the Caron X Pantone yarn first came out, I designed this hat pattern. I used two braids of one of their blue color palettes and I called the design the “Falling Snow Beanie”. This beanie was next on my list to update (as I’ve been going through my old patterns, updating, and republishing). I no longer have the blue sample of this hat, so I remade it in one of the braids that I did have on hand, the Olive Oil palette. Although, with these shades of tans and mustard, it didn’t look much like snow anymore, which led me to rename the pattern the Gradient Beanie.
The Caron X Pantone yarn is listed as a bulky (5) weight yarn; however, I find it to be more comparable to a heavier medium (4) weight yarn.
Pictured is one of my favorite Furls crochet hooks, the white and rose gold Odyssey hook. The Caron X Pantone yarn is so soft to begin with, and it just glides so smoothly on the Furls hooks!
Don’t forget to save this pattern in your favorites and add it to your project queue to save it for later! View this pattern on Ravelry here.

NOTES
- ** Note that Caron X Pantone is classified as a bulky (5) weight yarn; however, it is thin for a bulky weight yarn and I would compare it to a heavier medium (4) weight yarn.
- If you are using Caron X Pantone yarn, please note that you will need one braid of multiple colors and one braid of one single color to finish this project.
- Chain 1 at the beginning of each row does NOT count as a stitch (unless otherwise specified).
- Approximate circumference is the measurement that your band should comfortably stretch to (the actual length of your band will be shorter).
- Multiple: To adjust the pattern, use an even number of ribbed band rows/number of sts per row.
- While crocheting the colorwork, work your SC sts over the unworked color.
- Be aware that the frequent color changes in the colorwork may make your work tighter than normal; if you are unable to maintain the same tension throughout the colorwork, consider going up a hook size.
