Whether you call it a crochet slouchy beanie or a crochet baggy beanie, finding a pattern with the right amount of “floppy” drape can be a challenge. I designed this free slouch beanie crochet pattern, the Simply Slouchy Beanie, to solve that problem! Using a combination of simple stitches and specific row counts, I’ve created a hat that is stylish and comfortable.
This free slouchy beanie crochet pattern is one of my favorite designs because it is truly gender-neutral and incredibly versatile. I’ve included 7 different sizes below, ranging from 0-3 months through adult, so you can make a matching set for the whole family.
If you’re a visual learner, I’ve also included a step-by-step video tutorial (demonstrated in the adult size) to help you to crochet with ease.

I would classify this free slouch beanie crochet pattern as beginner-friendly. Because it uses a simple combination of single crochet ribbing and double crochet stitches, it is the perfect project for someone looking to move beyond a traditional beanie and experiment with drape and shaping.

Tips & Tricks for the Perfect Slouchy Beanie
- Track Your Progress: While working the rows of the ribbed band and the body of the hat, use a row counter to easily keep track of your progress across all 7 sizes.
- Check Your Gauge: To ensure a proper fit, always check your gauge before starting. This is the most important step for any crochet garment or wearable item.
- Customizing the Slouch: The slouch in a crochet hat comes from adding extra length (additional rows) beyond a standard beanie fit.
- Bottom-Up Construction: This pattern is worked from the ribbed brim up to the top. I find this to be the best method for accurate sizing because you can try the hat on as you go.
- Adjustable Fit: Using this bottom-up method, you can continuously check the fit and easily add or subtract rows to customize the exact amount of slouch in this free slouch beanie crochet pattern.

Yarn Substitutions & Alterations
I have made this slouchy crochet hat in a variety of worsted weight yarns. While any medium weight yarn will work, here are a few of my favorites.
- WeCrochet Brava Worsted: My favorite acrylic yarn that is soft and affordable.
- Red Heart Super Saver: Great for a durable, everyday beanie.
- Variegated Yarns: I love using yarns like WeCrochet Chroma Worsted, Lion Brand Textures, and Lion Brand Amazing, to create effortless, colorful stripes.
Pro Tip: No matter which skein of yarn you choose from your stash, it is always a good idea to check your gauge before starting to ensure your hat fits perfectly.
