Abbreviations

DC = double crochet

Special Stitches

SC2tog (using invisible decrease method): Insert hook into front loop of the first stitch. Insert hook into front loop of second stitch. Yarn over. Draw through the first two loops on hook. Yarn over. Draw through both loops on hook.

Notes

  • Checking your gauge is not required for this pattern. Use a hook that is smaller than the size recommended for your yarn weight. This will ensure that your stuffing will not show through the stitches.
  • All pieces of the bear are worked in the round. Use a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of each round.
  • Invisible decreases are recommended. Please see “Special Stitches”.
  • Safety eyes and noses pose a choking risk for babies; therefore, if making this toy for a baby, I recommend using yarn, felt, or embroidered details.
  • Head, snout, and arms require stuffing. Stuff each piece as you work to ensure the piece is completely filled. Do not add stuffing to the ears.
  • Blanket: Ch 3 at the beginning of each round does count as a stitch (unless otherwise specified).
  • See tutorial photos.

Quick Tips & Tricks for Your Crochet Bear Lovey

  • Safety First: For a baby-safe crochet bear lovey, use yarn embroidery for the eyes and facial features instead of plastic safety eyes. This removes any potential choking hazard.
  • The Best Yarn: I recommend using acrylic yarns or cotton blends for this pattern. They are durable, easy to wash, and hold their shape well, ensuring your security blanket lasts for years.
  • Perfect Placement: Always use pins to hold the head and arms in place before sewing. This ensures proper, symmetrical placement of the bear features onto the lovey blanket for a professional finish.

Crochet Bear Lovey Pattern Alterations & Customization

The Hug Me Bear Lovey pattern is highly adaptable. Here are a few ways to customize your design:

  • Larger Lovey Blanket: To make the crochet bear lovey blanket portion larger, simply add as many additional granny square rounds as desired. Finish the blanket with a row of single crochet (as noted in R12).
  • Change Yarn, Change Size: You can easily use a different yarn weight! For a super plush and larger feel, try chenille yarn or bulky yarn, like Parfait Chunky, but be sure to adjust your hook size to prevent holes and keep the stuffing secure.
  • Make a New Animal: Easily turn this teddy bear lovey crochet pattern into a different animal! Pair the blanket pattern with the head and arms from your favorite crochet animal pattern.
